In Thailand, formal spirit house ceremonies usually mark the beginning of building a home or business on newly acquired land. Ritual enables many people to cooperatively carry out complex activities that would otherwise be impossible to do in an orderly way. A common installation ceremony involves at least ten participants and a priest. In Thai villages celebrations for the Pi meung, or village spirit house, will receive very large gatherings of people from the whole village.
