Nang Mai, the tree nymph

The typical architecture of a san jaothi in the countryside is made of natural wood to harmonize with the landscape. The main characteristic of a san jao thi is that it has 4 pillar posts and a ladder that root it to the earth. The number four is symbolic of the material world and the ladder allows the spirits easy access in and out of the dwelling.

This large san jaothi at a rustic resort in the north of Thailand is modelled after a traditional Thai house. It has been offered to a gigantic old tree to honor the female tree nymph that lives there.  Her presence is so strong she has been seen floating around the property with long hair and a white gown. The land owners hope that this newly built large spirit house will keep her from wondering around and scaring the staff.
