The classic Saan Phra Phum, or Palace of the Land Guardian Angel is one of the most popular spirit houses in Thailand. Characterized by a single pillar post representing the cosmic Mt. Meru, its architectural style comes from the Indian Sanskrit word prasat, meaning heavenly palace. The size, shape and color are determined by the land owner’s height and birthday, but the architecture comes in a range of creative designs that are carried on through generations of spirit house artisans. The architects of the spirit world are not afraid to break free from the traditional building codes of heaven and continue to create innovative styles. Here’s a selection of some of my favorite designs of Saan Phra Phum, made for Pra Chaimonkol- The Victorious & Auspicious Guardian Angel.
